McIlroy Climbs Leaderboard at Tour Championship as Hovland Maintains Lead

Viktor Hovland remains atop the leaderboard at the Tour Championship, but Rory McIlroy made a significant move up the standings with a seven-under-par 63 in his third round. McIlroy began the day seven shots behind co-leaders Hovland and Ryan Gerard, initially falling further back with an early three-putt bogey on the second hole.

Despite the early misstep, McIlroy quickly recovered, carding four birdies over his next five holes. He added two more birdies on the 10th and 12th, interspersed with another bogey. A late surge saw him birdie three consecutive holes from the 15th, briefly putting him in a share of the lead at 10-under-par before a final-hole error. McIlroy's impressive round propelled him from a tie for 23rd to a tie for seventh, five shots behind Hovland.

Hovland extended his advantage with a third-round 65, while Ryan Gerard, who was a co-leader after the second round, carded a 66. Hovland now holds a five-shot lead over McIlroy, and a four-shot lead over Gerard.

McIlroy expressed satisfaction with his performance following a less consistent start to the tournament. He attributed his improved play to better putting, stating, "I think the difference today was I just putted a bit better."
