Royal Birkdale Set to Host 2026 Open Championship, Course Details Emerge

The golf world will return to England's northwest coast in 2026 as Royal Birkdale Golf Club prepares to host the 154th Open Championship. This will be the eleventh occasion the prestigious links course has welcomed The Open, known for its demanding yet fair test of golf.

Royal Birkdale is recognized for its distinctive par-70 layout, stretching approximately 7,223 yards. Unlike some traditional links courses that feature numerous blind shots, Birkdale presents clearly defined fairways. However, navigating these fairways is a significant challenge due to the ever-present coastal winds, which effectively narrow landing zones. Players who miss the short grass can expect to contend with thick rough, deep pot bunkers, or potentially out-of-bounds areas.

A Legacy of Champions

The course has a rich history of crowning notable champions. Past winners at Royal Birkdale include legends such as Peter Thomson, Tom Watson, Johnny Miller, and Lee Trevino. More recently, Padraig Harrington secured a victory here, and his current price for the Senior Open is +900 (Bovada). Jordan Spieth was the last champion at Birkdale in 2017, and he is currently listed at +4500 (Bovada) for the Masters Tournament.

Since Spieth's win in 2017, Royal Birkdale has undergone several modifications, particularly on its back nine.
