Louis Oosthuizen Withdraws from The Open Championship, Aldrich Potgieter Steps In

Louis Oosthuizen, the 2010 Open Championship winner, has announced his withdrawal from the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. The South African cited a back injury as the reason for his absence, an issue that will also prevent him from competing in the upcoming LIV Golf UK event. His withdrawal marks the first time since 2008 that Oosthuizen will not participate in The Open, breaking a streak of 16 consecutive appearances.

Oosthuizen shared the news on social media, expressing his disappointment at missing two events he typically anticipates. He emphasized that his immediate focus is on recovery to ensure he returns to competition fully fit. This marks only the second time in his career that he has missed The Open outright, with a previous withdrawal in 2013.

With Oosthuizen out, fellow South African Aldrich Potgieter will inherit his spot in the field as the first alternate. Potgieter secured his position despite finishing third in a qualifying event just hours before Oosthuizen's withdrawal was announced. Potgieter is currently listed at +7000 (Bovada) to win The Open Championship.
