The R&A is currently reviewing the final round tee times for The Open Championship, with potential changes hinging on England's progression to the World Cup final. Should England defeat Argentina in their semi-final match, which kicks off Wednesday evening, they would face Spain in Sunday's final, creating a significant scheduling conflict for sports fans and broadcasters.

R&A chief executive Mark Darbon confirmed that a decision on any timing adjustments would be made within 48 hours following England's semi-final. While acknowledging the potential for a clash, Darbon stated, "As an England football fan, it would be a great problem to have." The Open's final putt is currently scheduled for approximately 6:40 p.m. local time on Sunday, with the World Cup final set to begin at 8:00 p.m. local time in New Jersey.

Darbon indicated that the current schedule is believed to allow sufficient time for the championship's completion, even if a three-hole playoff is required, before the football match begins. Despite this, the R&A has been actively discussing the scenario, maintaining that the situation remains under review.

For now, the R&A is adopting a "wait and see" approach, emphasizing that no alterations to Sunday's start times at Royal Birkdale have been finalized. The organization has also confirmed that the World Cup final will not be broadcast on the big screens located around the Southport links, potentially creating a quandary for fans attending The Open who wish to watch both events.
